House & Collection        John S. Copley        Michael Francklin        Susanna Francklin

The Portrait of Michael Francklin

Michael Francklin's portrait was purchased by the Nova Scotia Museum in 1982 and has been on display at Uniacke House ever since. The portrait, is paired with one of his wife, Susanna, both by John Singleton Copley.

Michael Francklin was born at Poole, England, in 1733 and came to Halifax in 1752, just 3 years after the town was founded.

He established himself in business and profited greatly. In 1759 he became a member of the House of Assembly, and later of the Council. He also served as a colonial administrator and Indian agent.

In 1762, ten years after his arrival in Nova Scotia, Michael married Susanna Francklin. The young couple came to Nova Scotia that fall, and stayed for the rest of their lives.

In 1766, Michael Francklin was appointed lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, a position he held several times until 1772. He died at Halifax, 8 November 1782, and his body was interred under St. Paul’s Church. For more information, see his entry in The Dictionary of Canadian Biography.
