Geological Interpretive Walks with the Curator
Fee:Friday
$10/adult $5/child over the age of 4 ( minimum of 5 people.
Saturday
Free there is no charge for Parks for People walks.
Meet at Fundy Geological Museum (unless otherwise stated).
Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult
(Note:
participants can meet tour leader at beach access points call for time
and location. Your own transportation is required for all beach tours)
This series of interpretive
walks will help you discover the area's rich geological past and natural
history. All tours will depart from the Fundy Geological Museum (or
you can meet them at the site) and will last between three to six hours,
depending on the site visited. Please reregister and be prepared to take
own transportation. Wear walking shoes & layered clothing. Bring
a hat, sun screen, cool drink and a snack. Don't forget your camera!
There are some of the
walks that are slightly more difficult to access, there are potential problems
with cliff stability, unstable walking conditions on some foreshores, proximity
to cliff face.
The local area has an exceptional
number of features related to glaciation, Acadian dykes, wetlands and tidal
marshes, uses of stone in local buildings. These series of interpretive
walks will help you discover the area's rich geological past and natural
history. Weather permitting all tours will be conducted.( call to

June
14 Museum Day Weekend
Wasson
Bluff Special Place.
Wasson Bluff offers Jurassic-age
red beds, basalt lava flows, river channels and wind blown sands. Bones
from some of Canada’s oldest dinosaurs have been discovered in the tide
washed cliffs. that ruled before the dinosaurs. The rocks tell a
story of ancient seas and coal swamps, collision of continents and formation
of Pangea, and the development of a rift valley which contains the foot
prints and bones of animals from the Dawn of the Dinosaurs.
Meet
at Fundy Geological Museum, departure 10:30 am (approximately 15
minute drive to Two Islands beach access).

Island - East Bay #1
The rocks of East Bay-Partridge
Island present a cross section through Parrsboro's geologic past.
They tell of the warm tropical seas, shallow lakes and coal swamps that
existed during the formation of Pangea, and the desert sands and volcanic
flows deposited during the beginning of the age of dinosaurs.
Meet
at the Fundy Geological Museum at 9:45 am , ( approximately 15 minute drive
to Partridge Island Beach access).

The

Head- West Bay #1
The rocks of Ram’s Head-West
Bay area present a cross section through Parrsboro's geologic past. They
tell of the warm tropical coal swamps, rivers and shallow lakes that existed
during the formation of Pangea before the beginning of the age of dinosaurs.
This area has some of the most spectacular exposures of amphibian track
ways to be found in the Parrsboro area.

Spicers
Cove, Cape Chignecto Provincial Park #1
At
Spicers Cove, walk through a Coal Age fossil forest; see volcanic flows,
spectacular faults, igneous dykes, raised beaches, sea stacks, seals and
sea ducks.
Depart
FGM at 10:00 am or join us at the Red Rocks entrance to the Park at 11:00
am. (It is an additional 30-minute drive to Spicers Cove from this point). |

Frozen Past #1
The
land-forms around the Parrsboro area help to tell a story of the region’s
ancient past. Evidence for colliding continents and glaciation can be seen
along the roads north of the community.

Wards
Beach-Brookville Rock
View
where continents have collided, crushing Coal Age sediments and older rocks
during the formation of Pangea.

Greville).

25 Clark Head
The

26 Five Islands Provincial Park
The cliffs at Five Islands Provincial Park tell a story of Triassic
sand dunes, Jurassic lava flows and lake deposits from the age of
dinosaurs.
Meet at Fundy Geological
Museum, departure 10:.00 am (approximately 25 minute drive to Five Islands
Provincial Park beach access parking lot), meet at 10.30 at park.

1 (Friday) Wards Falls.
On
this 6-km walk you will see varied flora and fauna along a hiking trail
that leads to Wards Falls and the waters cascading over the Kirk Hill Fault.
Time permitting participants are then invited to explore the Carboniferous
age section exposed at nearby Fox Point.
Meet

22 Meet at Fundy Geological Museum, departure 9:30 am (approximately
45 minute drive to Joggins).
Joggins
Fossil Cliffs.
Walk
through Coal Age fossil forests, discover ancient river channels and trace
fossils made by metre long insects. The cliffs are home to some of the
world's oldest reptile fossils, which were found in the upright trunks
exposed by the tides of the Bay of Fundy.

23 Ram's Head- West Bay.
The rocks of Ram’s Head-West
Bay area present a cross section through Parrsboro's geologic past. They
tell of the warm tropical coal swamps, rivers and shallow lakes that existed
during the formation of Pangea before the beginning of the age of dinosaurs.
This area has some of the most spectacular exposures of amphibian track
ways to be found in the Parrsboro area.

at Fundy Geological Museum, departure 10:00 am, (approximately 30 minute
drive to Diligent River) . Tour begins with a wade through the harbour,
bring appropriate foot gear.

29 Thomas Cove, Economy Falls.
The
Thomas Cove site offers Triassic-age red beds, river channels and fossils
from a time before the age of dinosaurs. The shore along the cove provides
a panoramic view of the Minas Basin, shore birds and varied flora associated
with the low, wind blown Triassic head lands.
Time
permitting participants are invited to view where continents have collided;
see waterfalls cascade over faults marking the contacts between Coal Age
sediments and older rocks during the formation of Pangea. The varied flora
includes rarely seen plants.

30 Red Rocks-McGahey Brook, Cape Chignecto Provincial
Park.
The
Cobeguid-Chedabuctou fault zone which extends across Nova Scotia from Chedabuctou
Bay to Advocate Harbour marks the collision of ancient North America with
an ancient African continent 400 million years ago. The spectacular
folds and faults exposed along the shore, between Red Rock and McGahey
Brook, are mute evidence of the birth of the super continent of Pangea.

Rocks, West Advocate at 11.30 am.
